REPORT OF THE JUDGES
Prize of £250 : OLIVIA BAUCKHAM
This outstanding student has produced a large variety of really original art and she stands out as exceptionally gifted. We liked all her work on display and the depth of talent displayed in her portfolio.
Her oil painting ironically called "Don't Judge Me" is beautifully painted in particular the torso, hands and skeletal leg. "Uncomfortable John" her large scale painting in oil and acrylic on calico, and her separate smaller paintings on the same theme, show in the most original manner the pressures of life for an adolescent young man. In addition Olivia has produced paintings of her grandparents, father and appliqué embroidery all of the highest standard.
We are delighted to see that Olivia has won a place to study fine art at Loughborough University and we wish every success.
Prize of £150 : CHARLOTTE LAWSON
Charlotte is another gifted artist whose exhibited work and portfolio are of the highest standard.
We loved her painting of the three lions that demonstrates an original interpretation of the idea of painting the sinews and skeleton of a live animal with striking colours to attract the eye. Her group of paintings on the theme of recession are thought provoking and are very well painted and illustrate the different stages of life and the problems that can arise from youth to old age. Charlotte painting of New York gives the sense of vibrancy of that city and in complete contrast Charlotte has done some paintings based on her love of Jane Austin's work.
We also wish Charlotte every success at Oxford Brookes University where she is to study fine art.
Prize of £100 : GREG ROSE
Greg, another outstanding artist, we are certainly blessed with a very high standard this year, skilfully has an eye for finding art in all place and in different media.
Greg collects objects from all sorts of locations and turns them into original works of art. His two figures, who we believe are family, painted on wooden boards found in a skip are distinctive, striking, creative and individual. We also loved the painting of his mother and of a young woman. The mixed media three dimensional book shelf with an unusual puppet demonstrates his skill and sense of humour. His portfolio shows an expertise in printing and colour co-ordination and image making.
Greg is also to study art at Loughborough University and we wish him well.
